For many families exploring a recovery high school, one of the biggest questions is simple: What does a typical school day actually look like?
At Emerald School of Excellence, every day is intentionally designed to help students succeed academically while strengthening their recovery and overall well-being. Rather than separating education from recovery, we believe the two work hand in hand. Students receive a rigorous education in a supportive environment where they are surrounded by peers and staff who understand the importance of healthy choices, accountability, and connection.
Whether you’re considering enrollment or simply curious about recovery-centered education, here’s a look inside a typical day at Emerald School of Excellence.
Each school day begins with more than just attendance. Students are welcomed into a safe, supportive environment where they can settle in, connect with peers, and prepare for the day ahead. Creating consistent routines is especially important for teens in recovery. A predictable schedule helps reduce stress, build healthy habits, and establish the structure that many students need to thrive both academically and personally.
Upon their arrival, students are greeted by supportive staff members, music-filled hallways, and fresh coffee and snacks in the Student Lounge. After greeting friends and turning phones into the office for the day, the school day officially begins.
Students begin their day in morning group, a 45-minute peer support group led by our recovery staff. This time allows us to assess where students are at and what support they may need each day to be successful. From the moment students walk through the doors, they know they belong to a community that supports their success.
After group, academic classes begin. Classes at Emerald School of Excellence are year-round and run on an A Day/B Day Schedule. The morning includes two blocks, often for core classes, and the afternoon is two blocks of electives. Unlike many traditional high schools, Emerald offers small class sizes that allow teachers to truly know each student.
This personalized approach means educators can:
Students complete coursework aligned with North Carolina graduation requirements while receiving individualized attention that can be difficult to find in larger school settings.
One of the defining characteristics of Emerald School of Excellence is that recovery support is woven into every school day.
Rather than treating recovery as something separate from academics, students have regular opportunities to strengthen the skills that support long-term wellness.
Throughout the day, students may participate in:
In addition, students are able to access recovery staff at any time in the day when support is needed. Emerald School of Excellence prioritizes student wellbeing, recognizing that student needs must be met before learning can occur.
These experiences help students develop healthy coping skills, improve communication, and build resilience while continuing their academic progress.
Students at Emerald take core academic courses, including:
In addition, students have opportunities to explore electives and enrichment experiences that encourage creativity and personal growth. Depending on the semester, offerings may include art, music, ACT preparation, movement, and other engaging learning opportunities.
Hands-on projects, collaborative activities, and real-world learning experiences help make education meaningful while preparing students for college, careers, and life after graduation.
Recovery is strengthened through connection. We end each day with “Check-Out,” a 15-minute block for games and discussion meant to end our school day on a high note. Opportunities like “Check-Out” also provide structured time for students to strengthen their relationships with peers.
At Emerald, students become part of a school community where encouragement, respect, and accountability are part of everyday life. Throughout the day, students have opportunities to:
For many students, Emerald is the first place where they feel accepted for who they are and encouraged to become who they want to be.
Every student arrives at Emerald with a unique story, which is why individualized support is central to our approach.
Our team works collaboratively to help students navigate academic challenges, recovery goals, and future planning. Families are also an important part of the journey, with regular communication and partnership throughout the school year.
This whole-person approach allows students to gain confidence while developing the skills needed for lasting success.
A typical day at Emerald isn’t just about getting through today’s assignments—it’s about preparing students for what’s next.
Students work toward earning a high school diploma while building the skills necessary for:
By combining rigorous academics with comprehensive recovery support, Emerald helps students create a strong foundation for adulthood.
No two students have the exact same journey, but every student deserves a place where they can learn, grow, and recover in a supportive community.
At Emerald School of Excellence, a typical day includes challenging academics, meaningful relationships, personalized recovery support, and opportunities to discover new strengths. It’s a place where students are empowered to build healthy futures while achieving their educational goals.
