At Emerald School of Excellence, our students’ journeys go far beyond textbooks and lectures. We believe that true growth happens when our community comes together. Our Peer Day events are a perfect example of this philosophy in action. These days are designed to strengthen the bonds between students, foster personal growth, and provide valuable adventures outside of the classroom.
The start of the school year felt electric. Students and staff were kicking off the year with a trip to District 57. We chose this location to promote fellowship and teamwork. Most importantly, we wanted to build positive memories filled with laughter and fun. Students and staff were all together embracing the challenge of friendly competition.
The Grid: A Challenge for All
The main event was a series of challenge rooms called “The Grid.” Teams of students and staff moved from one room to the next where the challenges were varied. They included physical, mental, and intellectual puzzles. One minute you were solving a math problem. The next you were finding a song’s beat. Then you might be shooting basketball hoops. The goal was simple. Your team had to get the most points. This was done by completing as many challenges as possible. Everyone on the team had to contribute and the team had to work together. This experience encouraged communication and cohesiveness as we learned to work together for our team’s success. We had a shared goal…to win!
Peer Day at District 57 was all about getting out of our comfort zones. Every activity was an opportunity to build new connections, learn more about ourselves, and find common ground. It was inspiring to see students who were initially hesitant about the activities end up diving in to the challenges and surprising others with their unique talents. One person’s strength in a math puzzle helped their team. Another person’s rhythm helped them on a different challenge. This event was more fun than your average field trip. It showed us that when we embrace discomfort, we grow beyond our past limitations.
A Community Forged in Fellowship
Peer Days are more than just a field trip. They bring our community closer together helping us all find common ground. We are people first. We are students, educators, and staff second. This shared experience is invaluable. It helps us practice and promote our shared culture of recovery guided by the 12 principles.
This sense of community is a core aspect of recovery. The fellowship and teamwork we build on Peer Days are vital. They help us build strong relationships that are the foundation for our shared success. The more we invest in our school’s culture, the more we all thrive as a community.
Ultimately, Peer Day is about one thing. It’s about a community forged in fellowship, getting out of our comfort zones together, and building positive memories. We discover how we can rely on each other and embark on a journey toward personal growth and a shared future.
