At Emerald School of Excellence, we have the privilege of watching students make incredible transformations every day. Jayna’s story is one powerful example of what can happen when recovery and education come together in a supportive community.
When Jayna first walked through the doors of Emerald School of Excellence, she carried more than just a backpack. She carried fear, shame, and guilt from years of difficult experiences. Previous schools had left her feeling like she didn’t belong, and she struggled to imagine a future where things could be different.
Yet something changed after she toured Emerald.
For the first time, Jayna felt hopeful that she had found a place where she could truly belong. That hope became her motivation as she worked through one of the biggest challenges she had ever faced. After months of perseverance, she reached an important milestone—30 days of sobriety—which allowed her to officially enroll at Emerald. That first day of school wasn’t just the beginning of a new semester; it marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life.
Before coming to Emerald, Jayna faced obstacles that affected nearly every part of her life.
She struggled to build genuine friendships and often found it difficult to communicate her emotions. Substance use made it nearly impossible to maintain sobriety for any meaningful length of time, and dishonesty had become a pattern she wanted to break.
Academically, things weren’t much better. She was failing most of her classes, frequently absent or late to school, and had little motivation to learn. School felt like something to survive rather than an opportunity to grow. She couldn’t see how education connected to her future or helped her discover her purpose.
One of the most powerful aspects of Emerald School of Excellence is that students are surrounded by peers who understand their journey.
For Jayna, seeing other students living joyful, fulfilling lives in recovery changed her perspective. As she became willing to listen to those around her, she realized that life without drugs offered something she had been searching for all along: authentic friendships built on honesty and trust.
The support didn’t stop with recovery.
Emerald’s teachers met Jayna where she was academically, providing accommodations, encouragement, and individualized instruction that allowed her to learn at her own pace. Instead of feeling defeated, she began experiencing success. For the first time, academic achievement felt possible.
Today, Jayna’s life looks dramatically different.
She has earned all A’s and B’s while becoming a leader on Emerald’s Student Council. She’s known for helping classmates succeed and encouraging others both inside and outside the classroom.
Her recovery journey has continued to flourish as well. With more than two years of continuous sobriety, Jayna has developed a strong sense of identity, discovered purpose in her recovery, and learned to live with honesty and integrity. She now serves as a peer leader in her community recovery program and sponsors other young women who are beginning their own recovery journeys.
Looking ahead, Jayna hopes to become a counselor so she can help other young people find recovery and build meaningful lives of their own.
As Jayna simply puts it: “I found a light at the end of the tunnel.”
Jayna’s story reminds us that recovery isn’t just about overcoming challenges—it’s about unlocking potential.
