Making the Most of Summer: Helping Students Stay on Track Year-Round

For many students, summer is a time to take a break from the classroom. At Emerald School of Excellence, summer is also an opportunity for growth, healing, and academic progress. As a year-round recovery high school, Emerald’s flexible calendar allows students to continue working toward their educational goals while maintaining a healthy balance between learning and rest.

Beyond offering opportunities to earn credits, Emerald’s year-round schedule provides students with the consistency, routine, accountability, and supportive community that can be essential for maintaining progress in both recovery and mental health throughout the summer months.

A Flexible Path to Graduation

Every student’s journey is different. Some students come to Emerald hoping to accelerate their education and graduate early, while others need time to recover credits that were missed during periods of mental health challenges, substance use recovery, or residential treatment. Our year-round model is designed to meet students where they are and provide the flexibility they need to succeed.

Rather than viewing setbacks as permanent obstacles, Emerald offers opportunities throughout the year for students to regain momentum. Summer classes allow students to stay engaged academically without the pressure of a traditional full-time schedule, helping them build confidence while making meaningful progress toward graduation.

Summer Learning with Purpose

This summer, students have the opportunity to take a combination of core academic courses and engaging electives. The schedule includes:

  • English: English I, II, III, and IV
  • Math: Math I, II, III, and IV
  • History: American History I and II, Civics and Economics, and World History
  • Science: Physical Science, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth and Environmental Science
  • Electives: Music, Art, and ACT Prep

Students attend school for two weeks during June, two weeks during July, and two weeks during August. By participating in the summer semester, students can earn up to one-half credit in each course, making significant progress toward their graduation requirements in just six weeks of instruction.

Whether a student is catching up on credits or getting ahead, the summer semester provides valuable flexibility while maintaining the individualized support that defines the Emerald experience.

Balancing Academics and Rest

Recovery and mental wellness require balance. That’s why Emerald’s summer calendar is intentionally designed with breaks built into the schedule. Between instructional sessions, students enjoy weeks off, resulting in a total of seven weeks of summer vacation.

This structure allows students to continue their academic journey while still having ample time to rest, spend time with family, participate in treatment or therapy as needed, work, travel, or simply enjoy being a teenager.

Education That Meets Students Where They Are

At Emerald School of Excellence, we understand that the path to graduation isn’t always linear. Life circumstances, mental health challenges, and treatment can interrupt a student’s education, but they do not define their future.

Our year-round academic model reflects our belief that students deserve flexibility, second chances, and personalized support. By offering summer learning opportunities alongside meaningful breaks, we’re able to help students continue moving toward their goals at a pace that works for them.

At Emerald, success isn’t measured by how quickly a student reaches the finish line—it’s measured by providing the support and opportunities they need to get there.

Maintaining Momentum Through the Summer

For students in recovery or managing their mental health, consistency can make a meaningful difference. Long breaks from school often mean disruptions to daily routines, positive peer connections, and access to supportive adults. Emerald’s summer semester helps bridge that gap by providing structure and stability during a time when many students may otherwise feel disconnected.

Attending school at Emerald throughout the summer allows students to maintain healthy routines and provides students with accountability. The schedule is intentionally designed to balance academic progress with time for rest, giving students the opportunity to continue their recovery journey while still enjoying a true summer break.

At Emerald School of Excellence, we believe that recovery and education go hand in hand, and our year-round model helps ensure that students have the resources and encouragement they need every step of the way.
